Nooristan, or 'Land of Light', is a province in the northeastern part of Afghanistan, known for its beautiful high mountains and rustic landscape. At the end of the 19th century, the region was known as Kafiristan. The word Kafir comes from Arabic and means "denier of the truth." Stan is a Persian word for land or state. The origin of the name lies in the fact that the inhabitants, an ethnically distinct group of about 60,000 people, were animist at the time before they converted to Islam. When the region was conquered by Emir Abdur Rahman Khan in 1895-1896, the name was changed to Nooristan, which according to some refers to the "Enlightenment of Islam."
